ARRZ Racing
THE TEAM BEHIND
4 Kids - 2 Parents and a shitload of bikes = ARRZ Racing
We are a regular family that got hooked in one of the most challenging sports that kids can participate in - Motocross
It all started back in Alice Springs, NT, when Dad thought it would be a good idea to by a small Motorbike (a Yamaha PW50) for the kids to have a bit of a play on the red outback sand.
Of course the boy (Rohan) got hooked immediately, closely followed by his older Sister (Amira). A few rides out bush later Dad had the even better idea to check out the local Motocross Club in Alice Springs (ASMCC), where it all started to get serious.
Not that the kids were extremely talented, it was more that the kids got extremely exhausted after enjoying a day of racing on the track. They were completely knocked out, so Mum and Dad thought this is a great hobby for the kids and also for the parents.
So we all enjoyed Sunday racing, allthough it meant an early start to the day you normally sleep in.
Then one beautiful day at the track, Rohan was racing as usual and Amira had somehow forgotten to take a turn and instead went straight over the berm and fell down about two meters - her first rather more serious crash. Allthough not hurt, she was shaken up that much that she did not want to ride EVER again. We did not push her, so it was only Rohan riding from then on.
As Rohan got bigger and better it was time to step up to next bike. The only option for the little ones to be competitive is KTM 50SX (comes in mini and regular). Sure there is also the COBRA 50, but that is not an option for most people as they are hard to get.
Just be aware once the kids starts riding harder the maintenance of the bloody 50s does your head in. But again, to be competitive it's the only option.
So as Rohan started to get used to the KTM, we had a spare bike and Riona was keen to give it a go. It helped that there where other Girls in her age at ASMCC, so they had a lot of fun - and we were back to 2 little racers.
Race days at the track became a set part of our lives, so did more and more practice out bush and of course camping and the Greatest Race of them all -THE FINKE DESERT RACE.
That was our highlight of the year, as the kids loved the atmosphere and watched the bikes and buggies race past and then spent the rest of the day on their bikes carving up the sand.
So what was going on with Amira? Well, no interest in riding at all, until the day when our friend Garth Thompson (Jetcor Yamaha) mentioned that the ATV Nationals are coming to Alice Springs. Since he had the Yamaha dealership in Alice he was very keen on getting some Juniors on the Raptor 90 Quad. He asked Amira if she wants to race, which I rather looked at as a joke, but to our all surprise she said YES!!!!
So we bought her a Raptor 90 2 weeks before the Titles, ASMCC held a training session and 4 Alice Springs Juniors nominated for the Junior Limited Competition Class. Also Rohan was on a quad for the titles.
It was a great event and for Amira it was the turning point back into racing, as she had now 4 wheels and had a lot of fun again.
to be continued......
